Who are we?

Fairmont Church is a community seeking to live transformed lives through the Holy Spirit. We come from different backgrounds, cultures, and generations, yet we are all looking for a meaning and purpose that the secular world alone cannot provide. We rely on the Christian faith as our guide to discover more about God and ourselves. We rely on each other in joy and adversity to discover the meaning and purpose of our lives and how all our lives fit together as a part of God’s story.

Where do we come from?

Fairmont is a congregation of the Presbyterian Church (USA). Presbyterians emerged in the 16th century in Scotland as one of the original Protestant movements, emphasizing the sovereignty of God, the singular importance of scripture, and the connectional authority of the church over and against the authority of the crown. As Scottish and Scotch-Irish settlers moved to the New World in the 17th and 18th centuries, they brought their own independent minded churches with them. The Presbyterian Church (USA) is older than the United States—the only clergy person to sign the Declaration of Independence was a Presbyterian.

What do Presbyterians believe?

It’s all about God. Okay, perhaps you want a longer answer!

We believe God is both the ultimate source, pattern, intention, and destiny of creation and all our lives within it.

We believe every human person and indeed all creation is of infinite value and importance to God.

We believe God entered into this creation in the historic person of Jesus of Nazareth whose life, death, and resurrected life, demonstrated and made possible a new kind of human living that God intends for everyone.

We believe Jesus was a unique being, literally a God-Man whose very existence bridged the separation between humanity and God.

We believe God is present with us and for us in the Holy Spirit, nurturing and guiding human lives toward what God intends.

We believe the church is a community of messed up people who trust that there is something more to life beyond material satisfaction and are called to share that hope with the world.

We believe that in God’s good time, God will bring all things right and restore creation to the way it should be – we just don’t know when that will happen.

We believe the Bible is a sacred guide to life and belief, but it is also a human document understood through culture, language, and traditions. We also believe we are called to share in the great ongoing conversation between God, God’s people, and this book.

And finally, we believe a good romp in the bounce house is good for the soul!
